How to Use

Stand beside your horse, facing toward the rear. Run your hand down the horse's leg and ask them to lift their foot (command "foot" or "up"). Support the hoof with one hand. Using the pick end, clean out packed dirt, manure, and stones from the hoof, working from heel toward toe and around the frog (never dig directly into the frog). Use the brush side to sweep away loosened debris. Pay special attention to the grooves beside the frog where thrush often develops. Check for stones, punctures, cracks, or signs of thrush (black discharge, foul odor). Repeat for all four hooves. Pick hooves daily, and before and after riding.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse hoof pick and brush with water after each use to remove dirt and debris. Allow to dry. Periodically scrub with soapy water to sanitize. Replace when bristles become worn or pick becomes bent or damaged.

Notes

Daily hoof picking is one of the most important aspects of horse care—the saying "no hoof, no horse" reflects how critical hoof health is to overall soundness. Regular picking prevents thrush (bacterial infection), removes stones that can cause bruising, and allows you to catch problems like abscesses, cracks, or lost shoes early. Always pick hooves before riding to remove stones that could cause lameness or damage the hoof. Many horsemen keep multiple hoof picks strategically located (barn, trailer, grooming kit) for convenience.
